He grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his parents, Tom and Wendy, younger sister, Katie, and older sister, Kyle.
As a child, they would go on family vacations to their summer home on Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

The family was bonded together after the tragic death of Kyle, the 9-year-old reportedly fell 200m from a cliff while on vacation in 1994.
