- Vivian is a New Yorker and is of Egyptian-American ethnicity & heritage. She grew up in Rockland County, NY.
- She is fluent in Arabic & has also studied Arabic at The American University in Cairo. Additionally, she has a working knowledge of Urdu & Spanish.

- After Vivian graduated in 1999, she was a producer for WNBC Channel 4 for four years.
- She then worked as a freelance contributor to several outlets such as Newsweek Magazine, Voice of America and Jerusalem Post.
- In 2006, she became the producer for ABC News. While with ABC, Vivian continued as a freelance journalist, contributing to TIME.com, France24, etc on stories in the Pakistan – Persian Gulf. She expressed her hardships working in a non-Arabic country, where she had to learn the Urdu language and culture.
- From Jul 2007 – Jan 2008, Salama was an adjunct lecturer for the Department of Journalism in her alma mater – Rutgers University.
- Vivian became a specialist correspondent for the Middle East, and was promoted to Head of Abu Dhabi Bureau while working with Bloomberg TV in 2009. She covered major stories such as the Dubai and European financial crisis.
- After almost 3 years with Bloomberg, Mrs. Salama again became a freelance journalist covering stories in North Africa and Yemen. Some events that were reported by her was the Egypt presidential election, attacks on US embassies in Egypt and Libya and so on.
- In June 2014, the Associated Press announced Vivian to be the Iraq Bureau Chief. She would lead reporters, photographers and video journalists to cover top stories.
- She moved back to Washington as the Deputy Political Editor for the Associated Press (AP) in December 2015.
- In September 2016, she was pronounced the National Security Foreign Policy Reporter for AP, and became a White House Reporter in January 2017.
- In Sep 2017, she left AP and joined NBC News as a political reporter for a few months.
- From April 2018 to Jan 2020, Vivian joined The Wall Street Journal & covered the White House, under the Trump administration.
- She was a contributing writer to the book Radicalization, Terrorism and Conflict which was published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2013.

This is for Mrs. Salama, Hi, I am James, I’m 53 yoa. I spend a lot of time watching world as well as national news. I am on medical disability bc of Parkinson’s disease. I was diagnosed at age 34. I was able to continue working up until 45 yoa. Law enforcement was my field of choice. I watch this lady and cannot help but be impressed with her knowledge and obvious intelligence.
