Taegan Daniel Goddard was born on January 24, 1966, in Hartford, Connecticut, to parents Stephen Bradley Goddard (father), a lawyer and an author, and Patricia ‘Patty’ Goddard (née Blaney, mother), a nurse practitioner and former director of health services.
He has a brother, Brad Goddard, and a sister, Chelsey Goddard.

While he was growing up in Connecticut, Taegan was influenced by his family’s discussions of politics and journalism.
Taegan attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, from 1984 to 1988. He graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics.
Following that, he relocated to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he attended Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government from 1990 to 1992. He graduated with a Master of Public Policy degree in 1992.

In March 1993, Taegan got engaged to the woman who would become his wife, Sara Mercedes Warring.
Taegan married Sara on July 31, 1993, at the St James Episcopal Church in Woodstock, Vermont. The ceremony was officiated by Reverend Donald Boyer.

In 1999, Taegan founded Goddard Media LLC, where he has been working since the company’s creation. Goddard Media owns digital media properties specializing in public policy, as well as in politics. Political Wire is one of these digital media properties, alongside others such as Electoral Vote Map and the Political Dictionary.
From 1999 to 2004 Taegan was the Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of PIMCO Equity Advisers.
From 2003 to 2009, he was the Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of Oppenheimer Capital.
