Introduction :
Known as ‘The Ultimate Trump Chronicler’, Sopan Deb came into the public eye for his lightning-fast coverage of former President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign. The social media savvy, multimedia journalist is one among the top additions to The New York Times news team.
Education and Early Career :
- Sopan attended Howell High School, New Jersey from 2002 to 2006.
- He then went on to study for a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism at Boston University & graduated in 2010 with a minor in Political Science.
- While still studying, Sopan interned with WFAN Radio, WBZ-TV Sports and CBS News.
- He spent four months working as a reporter for Hayes FM Radio in West London, England.
- In 2009, he worked for five months as a reporter for Boston’s State House News Service and 11 months as Sports Director of WTBU Radio.
A Promising Reporter :
- After graduating from university, Sopan became a video Journalist & Multimedia producer for The Boston Globe, where he produced a documentary titled ‘Bill Russell: Larger than Life.’
- In August 2011 Sopan moved to New York, landing the job of Assistant Producer on NBC’s Rock Centre with Brian Williams.
- Nearly two years later he became a Field Producer for Al Jazeera Media Network.
- From April – August 2014 Sopan was the Social Media Editor for Major League Basketball (MLB).
- Sopan’s reporting career really took off when he joined CBN News in August 2014 as the associate producer for the Greater New York area.
- In June the following year he became Presidential Campaign Digital Journalist and spent most of 2016 reporting on the election campaign of Donald Trump.
- On January 9, 2017 Sopan joined The New York Times as a Culture Reporter and General Assistant.
The Trump Debacle :
- Throughout 2016, Sopan was quick to report on developments in the Trump campaign.
- He made Politico’s list of 16 Breakout Media Stars of 2016.
- Asking tough questions at press conferences, writing reports, producing videos and transcribing interviews at record speed & attending debates and rallies were his strengths.
- Sopan frequently endured abuse from Trump supporters – a man in Reno accused him of taking photos for ISIS while another, in Vegas, told the American reporter to “Go back to Iraq.”
- He was even arrested while filming protests for a cancelled Trump rally in Chicago, although he was released the same day & charges were dropped.
Awards and Trivia :
- During the one year Sopan worked for The Boston Globe, the young college graduate received two New England Emmy Nominations for Best Sports Feature and Videography, as well as a Webby and EPPY nominations for Best Sports Video.
- The same year, he was awarded a National Edward R. Murrow Award for his documentary on NBA star Bill Russell.
- Sopan has been playing piano since childhood, he even considered going into music instead of journalism.
