Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :

  • Kenneth Jacob Dilanian Jr. was born in 1968 in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. He is the oldest of two children born to Barbara (mother, deceased) and Kenneth (father), with a sister named Jane.
  • In May 2003, Ken married Catherine Yoon. The couple have two children together: Sons Kenneth III and Maxwell.

Early Life and Education :

  • Crediting his love for the news to his father — whom he calls a “political junkie” — Ken grew up watching the nightly news and surrounded by books on such topics as the Watergate scandal.
  • After attending East Longmeadow High School, Ken spent a year at prep school before going on to Williams College. At the small liberal arts college (considered by many to be the best in the country), Ken played defensive end on the football team and wrote for the school paper.
  • Dilanian also spent a semester abroad at New South Wales University in Sydney, Australia, studying Australian and Japanese politics. He graduated in 1991 with a degree in Political Science and history.

Career, Income, Salary and Net Worth :

  • Fresh out of college, Ken began working in print journalism. From 1991-1994, he worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer; from 1994-1995, he worked for the Fort Worth Star; and from 1995-1997, he worked for the San Antonio Express-News.
  • In 1997, Ken returned to the Philadelphia Inquirer, where he remained for the next ten years. During his tenure, he worked as an investigative reporter, a political reporter, and a Rome correspondent. During the latter role, he covered the Iraq war, often as an embedded reporter in Baghdad.
  • Following his stint with the Inquirer, Ken added to his resume by working for USA Today from 2007-2010 as an investigative reporter, State Department correspondent and Congressional correspondent; for the L.A. Times from 2010-2014 as the National Security correspondent; and for the Associated Press from 2014-2016 as the Intelligence writer.
  • Currently, working for NBC News as their Intelligence and National Security off-air reporter, Ken is often asked to provide commentary as an expert in the field. He has appeared on a few shows like “Kasie DC,” “MSNBC Live,” and “Deadline: White House,” to name a few.

Interesting Facts, Height and Trivia :

  • Perhaps drawn to a shared passion for news and history, Ken’s wife currently works as an executive assistant for The Washington Post and previously worked for the Smithsonian Institution.
  • In 2007, Ken received the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism for a series he worked on regarding child welfare deaths.
  • In 2014, Ken came under fire when it was revealed that he had been clearing stories with the CIA — and sometimes altering them —before publishing them. He again faced backlash in 2017 when he referred to a London terrorist attack as “small-bore.”
  • According to a story published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Ken’s sister had an impromptu wedding after being told by a nurse that her mom would not make it to her planned August ceremony. They held the wedding at the hospital that same day, on Friday — and their mom passed the following Tuesday!
