- Josh Gerstein was born on June 20, 1970, in Weston, Massachusetts, to parents Barbara (mother) and Dr Joseph Gerstein (father). His mother worked as a nurse, and his father was the medical director of the Tufts Health Plan.
- Both Josh’s parents worked for Smart Recovery, helping people suffering the consequences of drug and alcohol addiction.

- Josh started working as a senior White House reporter at Politico in January 2009, only days before the newly elected President Barack Obama’s inauguration day.
- Prior to this, Josh was working for The New York Sun from 2003 to 2008 as their national reporter, covering political and legal stories that affected the nation directly. The newspaper shut its doors in 2008, but not before Josh covered stories of great significance. He was one of the very select few who got to cover the story of Sami al-Arian, a Floridian college professor accused of having ties to Islamic jihad & under investigation by the FBI for over twenty years.
- He also reported on the trial of Lewis Libby, who had served as an aide to the White House of former President George W. Bush, convicted with obstructing justice that could uncover a CIA leak.
- From 1995 to 2003, Josh was at ABC News, where he also covered the White House. He was present at the White House when former President Clinton was impeached and when the 9/11 attacks happened.
- He also acted as the Beijing correspondent for ABC News from 2002 and 2003.
