Hello Hannah! I’m very disturbed by the lackadaisical attitude towards an incident of sexual harassment in Manitoba’s governing political party. (conservatives). I don’t really care what party it is; this behavior is unacceptable whichever party this happens, or any walk of life.
The incidents happened regarding an MLA, Rick Wowchuk. He repeatedly sexually harassed his assistant and, although she complained to the correct resources, nothing was done. This emboldened the actions of Wowchuk where he asked his assistant if she wanted to see a picture of hard-working beavers. It was then that he showed her a picture of nude women wearing hard hats. The assistant quit her much loved the job and Wowchuk was sent for ‘sensitivity’ training!!! Wowchuk apologized for his 5 incidences of sexual harassment saying, ‘he regrets his behavior and it will not happen again. We, and all other women, understand that another misogynist just got off free. His words are just meant to placate those who will listen. We women all know that the training was a smokescreen and that any man who behaves this way inherently will never change his sexist views.
Everything now goes on as normal, he keeps his job although the assistant does not. She will probably, in unspoken terms, be blackballed from ever holding any position within the current political environment.
NOBODY seems to want to care about this whole situation!!! In fact, Wowchuck got re-elected in 2019!!! Things will never change if we don’t speak up! You may even find yourself being blocked from this story by the ‘old boys club’s.
