- Franita Tolson was born on August 8, 1980.
- She attended Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, from 1998 until 2001, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.
- Franita then attended the University of Chicago Law School from 2002 until 2005, achieving a Doctor of Law degree. While there, she was a member of the University of Chicago Law Review. She also received an award – the Thomas Mulroy Prize for Oral Advocacy, at the Hinton Moot Court Competition.
- From 2003 to 2004, Franita was a research assistant under Professor Cass Sunstein, working on the project ‘Are Judges Political? An Empirical Analysis of the Federal Judiciary’.
