Phulwa Khamkar is a well-known Marathi dancer and choreographer from Mumbai.
Early Life and Education :
Phulwa learned her dance training from Ashatai Joglekar. First, she took lessons in Kathak, followed by training in contemporary dance. In the first 15 years of her life, she had not learned any dance and was trained in gymnastics.
For her education, Phulwa went to Balmohan Vidyamandir in Dadar, Mumbai. Later, she completed her M.Com from Mumbai University. She never considered dancing as a career earlier as in college, as she loved athletics. During that time, she had also received the Chharatrapati Puraskar for gymnastics.
In fact, the name Phulwa was suggested by her father. He was a Marathi literature author. Phulwa was the name of the first magazine he had written for.
Professional Life :
Back in the 1990s, Phulwa had trained her college dancer for Sony TV’s show Boogie Woogie and also she trained Aishwarya Rai for the movie Taal.
She also participated in Zee’s Dance India Dance Super Moms contest, where she reached the top 16 and her performance was well appreciated.
Later popular Marathi movies like Natrang, Popat, Jhapatlela, Mitwa, Poshter Girl etc. had her as a dance choreographer.
The songs of Natrang became very popular because of their dance steps. Phulwa guided Amruta Khanwilkar, Sonalee Kulkarni and Atul Kulkarni on perfecting their art.
She has also done choreography for few other Hindi and South Indian films and also runs a dance class and dance academy in Dadar.
