Introduction :
Salva Dut is a Southern Sudanese activist and the founder of the non-profit organization Water for Sudan.
Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :
- Salva Dut was born in 1975 in the southwestern area of South Sudan. A part of the ethnic Dinka tribe, Salva spent his childhood tending to sheep and cows. He has a few sisters.
- When he was only eleven years old, the Sudanese civil war ripped apart his village and Salva was ripped away from his family. Together with other boys that would later be referred to as ‘The Lost Boys of Sudan,’ Salva sought shelter in refugee camps across other African countries in Ethiopia and Kenya.
- Dut initially spent four years in a camp in Ethiopia, and then became the leader of a group of over 1500 boys that embarked on an 800-mile journey to another camp in Kenya. By the time they reached the Kakuma camp in Kenya, over a third of the boys had succumbed to the perils of the tough journey.
- In 1996, Salva was one of the 4000 Lost Boys to receive shelter from the US State Department, which allowed him to relocate to Rochester, New York.
- In Rochester, Salva met the Moore family through church. The Moores took him in, offering him shelter, food and a family away from home.
- In 2001, Salva found out that his birth father was still alive. In January 2002, despite the still-ongoing conflict, he returned to his home Sudan for the first time since leaving it. His father was seriously ill due to the lack of access to clean water of his village.
- Salva is now married with children. In 2010, he relocated with his family to Kampala, in Uganda, to have easier access to his work in South Sudan.
Education, Career and Net Worth :
- For his education, Salva attended the Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York.
- He worked three jobs to be able to pay for the costs of the Monroe Community College.
- Affected by his first-hand witnessing of ravages and the lack of water caused in South Sudan, Salva felt compelled to do all in his power to help.
- In 2003, Salva founded Water for South Sudan (WFSS) with a handful of friends. The organization aims to raise money to drill wells, to provide water access to poor people. The first well was drilled in 2005, in the village where Salva’s father lived.
- Since then, WFSS has drilled over 300 wells across the area and has taught communities how to be self-sufficient with their access to water.
Fun Facts, Height and Trivia :
- Salva is so invested in helping his people that he is even collaborating with a member of the Nuer tribe (historical enemies of Salva’s tribe Dinka!). The two tribes worked on a project together & drilled wells as a joint effort.
- In 2010, author Linda Sue Park published a novel that was mainly based on Salva’s story. Park used the book to bring attention to WFSS.
- Dut has dual Southern Sudanese and American nationality.
