Maggart was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee.
She is married to her husband, Maajid Usman Nawaz, a British radio presenter, and social activist. The couple currently resides in England with their son, Gabriel, born in February of 2017.

In recent years, due to Nawaz’s social activism, Rachel has had to endure fierce criticism, cyberbullying, and stalking from his detractors.

Rachel attended the Southern Methodist University (SMU), from 2003 to 2005. She was part of the school’s distinction honor roll and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

She left SMU in 2005 and became a student at New York University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music in 2007. During her time at NYU, she was part of the school’s Peer Health Exchange.
In 2009, she studied Industrial and Product Design at the Pratt Institute before pursuing Art History, Criticism and Conservation at Hunter College, from 2011 to 2012.
Later, in 2014, Rachel went on to the University of London and earned a Master of Arts degree in Art History, Criticism and Conservation from the University’s Birkbeck College.

Rachel’s professional career began in 2006, when she worked for Rolling Stone magazine as an archiving intern for four months.
Maggart then went on to become a Legal Assistant for Investment Management Group for almost one year, before taking on the role of Project Coordinator at 32BJ Legal Services in September of 2008.

Rachel joined the French learning institute Alliance Francaise as a Public Relations Assistant in July 2009. She worked for the organization for one year and a half before joining Koszyn and Company as a Development Associate in June of 2011.
