- In July 2018, Mollie went missing after she went out for her routine jog in Brooklyn post dog sitting. She was last seen at around 7:30 P.M and failed to turn up at work the following day.
- During the investigations that followed, over 500 interviews were taken and over 2000 tips received. There was also a monetary reward of $366,000 for finding Mollie.
- On August 21, 2018, police announced that her dead body was found in Poweshiek County located in south eastern Iowa and that she had multiple sharp injuries, making it a case of murder.
- After scanning a surveillance footage near the area Mollie went jogging, police identified a Chevrolet Malibu that drove in and out of the area at the time. The killer suspect turned out to be Cristhian Bahena Rivera, a 24-year-old illegal immigrant.
- A Mexican from El Guayabillo, Guerrero, Mexico, Rivera had arrived in the U.S. when he was 17 years old and had been living and working in rural Poweshiek County area for a long time under a false identification, John Budd.
- When police approached the suspect, he confessed to kidnapping and killing Mollie, leading them to her dead body in an isolated location in a cornfield.
- The suspect was charged with first degree murder on August 22nd 2018. However, he pleaded not guilty on September 19, 2018.
