Introduction :
- Karuna Nundy is an Indian lawyer & intellectual, mainly operating in fields like commercial and media. A staunch women’s rights activist, she is well-known for helping frame and reviewing India’s anti-rape bill.
- Currently, living in Delhi, Nundy also practices law as an advocate in the Supreme Court of India, while also attending various law-related panels and seminars. Besides her work at the Supreme Court, she also spends time advocating important human rights issues.
Personal Life : Parents, Family and Education
- Karuna was born and brought up in a traditional Bengali family in Bhopal. Her parents served as role models for her growing up, and her desire to do something that matters and impacts others’ lives was due to their influence, as they left high-profile jobs to work as social activists.
- She became passionate about feminism from a very young age, as she was surrounded by the then misogynist culture in a conservative town.
- After finishing high school, Karuna went to attend St. Stephens College in Delhi & secured her degree in economics. She also started gaining an interest in law and decided to pursue it as a career choice.
- Later, she also pursued a law degree from Cambridge University & has a Master’s degree from Columbia University in New York.
Work, Fees and Salary :
- After finishing college, Karuna worked as a TV journalist for a short period before moving to England to study at Cambridge University, and then she went to New York to pursue her LLM.
- She started working for the Supreme Court in 2002 & is still one of the youngest lawyers in Indian history to work for the Supreme Court.
- Her passion for equality and free speech led her to work and help strike down the Bill 66A of Indian IT act, which restricted people from expressing themselves freely on the Internet. She even fought on behalf of the YouTube Channel AIB, when they came under fire for hosting the AIB Roast.
- She also famously took up the litigation for Bhopal gas tragedy, which was considered one of the world’s worst industrial disasters.
- The gruesome murder and rape of a girl in Delhi in 2012 led her to engage with the anti-rape laws and sexual harassment of women in India. She also started work to help pass a bill, which criminalizes marital rape.
- The talent attorney has appeared in numerous talk shows and lent her expertise and experience to various interactive programs and discussions held on social media to spread awareness of basic human rights.

- Karuna’s father left his prestigious job of working at Harvard Medical School to focus on social activism and took a job to work at a public hospital in Delhi. Furthermore, her mother gave up her flourishing academic career at the London School of Economics to set up an organization for people with cerebral palsy.
- Karuna is quite active on her Twitter (now called X) handle, and regularly tweets about international as well as national judicial and political issues.
- Even though Karuna’s native tongue is Bengali & she uses English for much of her work, she loves Sanskrit and is well versed in the ancient language.
