- Karen Schaler was born on December 19, 1968, to school teacher parents Harry Schaler (father) and Lao Schaler (mother).
- She was raised in Seattle, Washington, as well as in Los Angeles, California, where she moved during her last year of high school.
- Karen attended the California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), where she graduated from with honors with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications/Broadcast Journalism and Sociology.
- In 2008, Karen moved to New York City to start anew, at the age of forty, just a few weeks before the financial stock market crashed.

- After graduating from the California State University, Karen dedicated herself to broadcast journalism. Her first job as a broadcast journalist was in Billings, Montana.
- This path led her to become a war correspondent. She was the first journalist ever assigned to a combat Apache helicopter in Afghanistan. While in Afghanistan, Karen produced, wrote, and directed a one-hour long documentary that aired on ABC and went on to receive an Emmy award.
- Karen was also the first TV journalist to be assigned to troops in Bosnia, where she again created a half-hour documentary that aired on NBC and was also awarded an Emmy.
- After deciding to start fresh in her career, Karen moved to New York City in 2008 and launched her brand Travel Therapy.
- At Travel Therapy, she spent over a decade as the host and creator of Travel Therapy TV. Travel Therapy also became a book, and it brought Karen many TV appearances.
- After studying Hallmark movies, Karen wrote the script to A Christmas Prince in 2014, quickly finding an agent for it. To her surprise, it was Netflix who picked up the script, rather than Hallmark. Although she was not involved in the movie’s production, A Christmas Prince was released in 2017 and quickly became one of Netflix’s biggest original hits.

- She has published several more books, including Finding Christmas and Christmas Camp. As part of the promotional work for Christmas Camp, Karen created a real-life Christmas Camp event in Scottsdale, Arizona.
- Karen loves traveling and has visited close to 70 countries worldwide. She credits her grandparents with instilling this love in her. She started traveling at the young age of ten years old to visit them in their winter home in Mexico.
- Karen’s December birthday and her penchant for Christmas-related works have earned her the nickname ‘Christmas Karen.’ Actually, her dad Harry Schaler organized a Christmas scavenger hunt every year while she was growing up, which helped foster her love for all things Christmas.
