I’m a 56 year old woman who grew up with lots of what you espouse. In your chapter on Compromise….and how there is no compromise on matters of principle, I laughed out loud and said, “and how many marriages has he had?” I was elated to find out you have had only one marriage – at least that is made public.
To tell you what an idiot I was, I used to have Winston Churchill’s quote regarding “never surrender” on my wall. As a high school teacher, I would write it out on the chalk board every day for the first few weeks of a school year and tell the kids it would be a bonus question on their exams.
Good idea.not a government school thing, though. I got called into the office for it, etc., etc., Eventually, my term with the local school system ended – I was too tough, I required 11th graders to write two papers – one per semester. I bored them with classes about how to write a paper. I gave them an “F” if the finished product had any spelling mistakes, or reference mistakes. Even though it was an honors class, I wasn’t allowed to do that.
Hmmm.
my marriage has been a very happy one – but that’s only because I got very ill 25 years ago and finally accepted that life had to be a compromise or I was going to just explode/spontaneously combust, and then what a mess I would have to clean up. Didn’t seem worth it.
I’ve yet to spontaneously combust. People who don’t know me well at all, meet me and think I am a saint, with a lovely personality, “despite all the illness”…They think when they see me I’m just the embodiment of Christian patience. (Ha! Thank God nobody can read my thoughts and I have learned the judicious use of prescription medications – i.e.tranquilizers. Better living through chemistry – I thought that was a joke – apparently not. )
The other day, my son, who is in his twenties, gave me a copy of your book. “It’s got all these great ideas in it – totally awesome ways of looking at things”……I have read a short bit of it, and keep laughing as so much of it is the common sense that I was raised with, that my dear husband was not raised with and found completely foreign.
I’m thrilled you wrote this book and that my son has found it. He has since passed it along to his father, who is discovering revelation after revelation.. She reads me bits of it from time to time….and I just sit here amused…as I take another tranquilizer to quell the pit in the stomach burning frustration that rises up (I no longer have AN ulcer….my entire stomach IS an ulcer, or so the experts say). I want to scream, “You remember back 30 years ago, when we discussed all this in pre-marital counseling, and your said, “Sure”…And then once we got married you did the exact opposite!!!”
But I don’t say that. I just smile sweetly (yes, it takes makes up and facial tighteners in order to do that, but there are some good bargain brands on the market, not the least of which is Preparation – H – that will tighten up just about anything, let me tell you from experience).
I’m very glad somebody was able to make them listen.
Are things better, you might ask. Absolutely. They have NEVER been more directed and disciplined with their hobbies than they are now.
Thanks, heaps!
Sincerely,
Kathy in Memphis
