Jacob Barnett is an American physics researcher and a current Ph.D. candidate at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. A child prodigy, Jacob made national headlines as a child when he was admitted to university at just ten years old.
Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :
- Jacob Barnett (known as Jakey to his parents) was born in Westfield, Indiana.
- He is the oldest son born to parents Michael and Kristine, with younger brothers, Wesley and Ethan.
- After growing up in Indiana, he currently lives in Ontario, Canada, while he works on his doctoral degree.
- After being diagnosed with mild to severe autism at 2 years old and predicted to never speak or read, Jacob is now working on his Ph.D.
- He has a girlfriend and continues to live in his own apartment.
Early Life and Education :
- Following his diagnosis, Jacob was put into intensive therapy and a pre-school for children with special needs but was pulled out after neither seemed to be helping. Instead, his mom started teaching him at home, focusing on the things he seemed interested in, like math and science.
- Excelling under his specialized curriculum, Jacob started sneaking into physics classes at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) by the time he was eight years old.
- After auditing a physics class — and receiving an A on the final exam — IUPU invited him to enroll there. First, he had to complete the Indiana curriculum for grades 6-12 — a feat that he achieved in just over a year! By ten years old, the young Jacob was officially a college student.
- By the time he was 15, Jacob had exhausted the curriculum at IUPU, and in 2013, his whole family moved with him to Waterloo, Ontario in Canada to attend the University of Waterloo through the Perimeter Scholars International.
- He was then accepted in the world-renowned Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics for graduate school — the youngest person ever to be admitted. He continues to work there on his Ph.D. at the prestigious school.
Professional and Career Progress :
- While at IUPU, Jacob worked as a researcher & was credited with his first published paper by 13 years old. In doing so, he became the youngest astrophysics researcher in the world. ‘Physical Review A,’ a scientific journal circulated on sites like NASA and The Smithsonian, accepted his paper.
Fun Facts, Height and Trivia :
- By age 3, Jacob could speak four languages & could finish 5000 piece puzzles, recreating complex street maps out of Q-tips, and teaching himself Braille.
- When completing his high school equivalency tests, he taught himself calculus, algebra and geometry in just two weeks.
- The Perimeter Institute where Jacob got enrolled for his Ph.D. is considered by many to be more difficult to get into than the physics programs at Harvard, Stanford and MIT.

I don’t know why people are so critical of this guy. After listening to him speak in a TED talk, I’m impressed even if he hasn’t got a BS. I hope he’s a happy young guy and as a kid, he sure appeared happy.
I don’t understand why this so-called prodigy has already spent 8 years without completing his Ph.D. He should have finished long ago.
Your comment of ‘so-called’ would not have been made if you’d read his history. His theory is such that when evaluated by one of the best professors in the u.s. it was said to be new physics, and would win a nobel prize when completed. His mom’s book says he wants to make sure there are no errors in it, so he goes over it repeatedly. It seems it could be so new there is no one except him who can understand it.
What a story it is…Jacob’s upbringing! Definitely play is so important to have in kid’s younger years with the parents involved! Are the Barnetts in trouble for abandoning Natalie? What are Nathan and Wesley doing now?
Do autistic kids still go to Acorn Academy and is Jacob’s place still “alive”?
What kind of future will Jacob Barnett have? He is now finishing up on his Ph.D. in mathematics. So, what’s next after he leaves Perimeter school for mathematics. Will he work for Uncle Sam or will he seek the highest paying job a mathematician can get? Whatever he decides to enter, no doubt it will be exclusive for a great future in possibly, astrophysics or just a mathematician. Whatever his choice, it certainly won’t be anything in a lesser position but near the top of his profession.
