- Garland was born in the US and grew up in Vermont. It is reported that Eric’s maternal family immigrated to the United States from Avellino, Italy in 1904.

- Garland enrolled at the University of Vermont, located in Burlington, Vermont, in 1992. The small college had strong ties to its community and local businesses, which attracted Garland.
- He graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor’s degree in International Business, then took some time away from school to work.
Master’s :
- In 2005, Garland returned to school and began attending George Washington University, a private school based out of Washington, D.C. He graduated in 2007 with a Master’s degree in International Affairs, concentrating in technology policy.

Career Abroad :
- After graduating with his bachelor’s degree, Garland moved to Paris and immediately began working for the American Chamber of Commerce in France.
- The business, a non-profit, is the oldest US business overseas and still has a powerful pull in the global market. Garland signed on as a marketing assistant and worked there for six months, learning French in the process.
Early Marketing Work :
- In September of 1996, Garland took an international marketing assistant job at Instrumart, an industrial supply company that was looking to take full advantage of the then-budding digital world.
Consulting :
- After a year with Instrumart, he moved on to the Fletcher Mountain Group, a global advising company for Fortune 500 companies.
- There, he put his technological skills to work and became a competitive intelligence analyst.
- Two years later, he moved on to Coates and Jarratt and began working as a trend analyst. It was here that his interest in digital trends and using them to make accurate predictions truly began to take off.
Competitive Futures, Inc. :
- In April of 2002, a few years before he went on to get his Master’s, Garland took his expertise and experience and opened his own consulting company, Competitive Futures, Inc.
- Through them, he continues to provide research on the changing trends and macroeconomics of the world to companies that want an advantage in the marketplace.

- As his reputation grew, Garland began speaking publicly. He can now be hired to give Keynote speeches at business events.
