Introduction :
Dr. Seema Yasmin is a British Indian doctor. She is also a journalist and a professor, as well as the director of the ‘Stanford Health Initiative’ at Stanford University.
Personal Life : Parents, Family and Education
- Dr. Seema Yasmin was born in April 1982, in London, England. Her mother, Yasmin Halima, was born in India but moved to England at a young age. Yasmin had an arranged marriage with Seema’s dad and gave birth to Seema when she was nineteen years old.
- When Seema was seven years old, her parents separated. Yasmin Halima moved to London to continue her education and Seema went with her and grew up in the city. Her aunt also had a great influence on her upbringing.
- After Seema graduated from high school, she attended the Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), where she graduated with first-class honors in a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry.
- She then attended the University of Cambridge from 2005 to 2009 and became a Doctor of Medicine.
- She also did a Global Fellowship in Journalism at the University of Toronto.
- Seema met the man who would become her husband, Emmanuel Farrugia when they were both seventeen years old.
- After spending most of her time in London, Seema and her husband Emmanuel followed Seema’s mother, Yasmin Halima, to the United States.
- Emmanuel and Seema initially settled in Dallas, Texas. On December 26, 2015, a tornado swept through the state and destroyed their house while Emmanuel and Yasmin Halima were there. They were both unharmed. Seema was on a trip to Liberia at the time
- Following the aftermath of the tornado, Seema and Emmanuel now reside in New York City.

- Dr. Seema worked as a physician at the Homerton Hospital NHS Trust from 2009 to 2010.
- After moving to the United States, she was an epidemic intelligence service officer at the CDC from 2011 until 2013.
- From 2014 until 2017, she was a health and science reporter at The Dallas Morning News, as well as a professor at the University of Texas at Dallas.
- Since 2014, Seema has been a medical analyst for CNN.
- Since 2017, she has also been working at Stanford University, first as a John S Knight Journalism Fellow and then as the director of the Stanford Health Communication Initiative.
- In 2015 and 2017, Dr. Yasmin won a reporting award from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. In 2016, she was presented with the John P. McGovern Award in Health Promotion, from the University of Texas at Austin.

- Following the divorce of her parents, Seema’s mother took her own grandmother’s name as her last name, an acceptable practice under Islamic law. Seema then took on her mother’s name as her last name too, not associating herself with her father’s name anymore.
- Seema has a pitbull-mix dog called Lily.
- She is also a published author of books such as The Impatient Dr. Lange (2018) and the upcoming Muslim Women are Everything, due to be released in 2020. She is also an accomplished poet.
- Dr. Seema’s essay about the tornado that ravaged her house won the Mayborn literary non-fiction award.
