  • Helen was close to her grandad and spent a lot of time with him when he was at Bolton Hospice. Later in 2006, the place was also her mother’s final resting place after spending 18 months there.
  • She has talked about how she heads every year to her annual cancer screening after her mom contracted the disease in her 40s. Helen was only 9 years old when her mother was diagnosed and battled cancer for 15 years before her eventual death in 2006. Unfortunately, her mum passed away just eight weeks before Helen’s wedding.
  • In 2006, Helen married her husband Jonathan and moved back to her hometown, Tyne from Newcastle to support her family. She has three children with him.

Early Life and Education :

  • Dr Helen was born in 1983 and raised in Bolton. She grew up wanting to be a doctor from when she was five years old. She wasn’t particularly scientifically or practically skilled but did have an inherent curiosity into people’s lives and experiences.
  • She started medical school at Newcastle University but didn’t want to be a GP back then. She wanted ‘excitement’ and ‘reward’ and knew that she would never find it in an office.
  • Seven years later, Dr Wall had gone through several junior doctor jobs. During this she came to the realisation that she didn’t really need the excitement and crash bleeps to be rewarding. She wanted to belong somewhere she could make a difference. Against all the previous odds, she chose to be a GP.

Career :

  • After graduating in 2006, Dr. Wall went through a few junior doctor jobs. Then from 2009 onwards, she has been working at Oaks Family Practice, Bolton.
  • She was also made GP partner at the same practice.
  • In October 2016, even though she had decided not to pursue a career in obstetrics, she became a Clinical Director for Women’s and Children at Bolton CCG. She now spends half her week in this area and the other half as a GP Partner in Bolton.
  • Dr. Helen also works part time at the NHS as the Director of Clinical Services from 2020.
  • She also started appearing on BBC Breakfast as their regular GP in a freelance position.
  • In 2022, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Healthcare/Public Health which was issued by Bolton University for her outstanding contribution to public health.

Covid 19 Response :

  • When the outbreak began, Dr. Wall showed exemplary leadership in implementing Bolton city’s clinical response to the pandemic.
  • She was the senior responsible officer for the borough’s vaccination programme and was responsible for organizing vital PPE and oxygen supplies at the height of the pandemic.
  • The borough’s vaccination programme started in December 2020, when Dr Helen gave the first Covid jab to Ann Clubley.
  • Dr Helen was also awarded the Faculty of Public Health’s President Gold Medal for Inspirational Leadership for leading the corporate response to Covid 19.
