Doireann grew up on the Model Farm Rd in Cork, Ireland as the daughter of a self-employed businessman and his teacher wife. Her father passed away in April 2019, shortly before Doireann learned that she herself had cervical cancer.
Doireann has a brother and a late sister named Elaine, who was also her best friend. In 2011, Elaine O’Leary was killed in a road traffic crash in Australia, 2 weeks before Doireann’s medical internship at the Irish College of General Practitioners was set to begin.
