Introduction :
Carol Reiley is a surgical roboticist who was name ‘The 2016 Woman of Influence’ by the Silicon Valley Business Journal.
Education, CV & College :
- After viewing pacemakers at a young age, Carol grew up with a love of robots that she wanted to turn into a career.
- She first attended Santa Clara degree where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering. During her time there, she worked on a project that saw her studying underwater robotics.
- While there, she obtained her Masters in Computer Science, before moving on to John Hopkins University where she completed her PHD in Computer Science.
- While continuing her research, she has also served on the boards of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and the JHU Engineering Diversity Council.
- As of 2018, she is the owner of over 6 robotic patents.
Personal Facts, Accomplishments and Family :
- Reiley states her favorite book is Enders Game, but she believes most people would be able to guess that.
- Many will be surprised to hear that her favourite movie of all time is Toy Story.
- Rather than her dozens of amazing achievements, the one she says is her greatest is that she was able to master her own PC & the internet. She has said that this was most important, as it allows her to do everything else.
- Carol lists her computer engineer father as her biggest career inspiration, but says she was also inspired by her volunteer work at a hospital at a young age. She said she witnessed various pace makers during her time there, and became fascinated by them.
- She self-published a children’s book titled ‘Making A Splash’ with the help of the social network tool ‘Crowdfunder.’ The book was initially meant to just be a present for her niece, but she was eventually proud of what it has become.
Carol Reily Husband and Marriage :
- At a Robotics Conference in Kobe, Japan, Carol met and instantly fell for Professor Andrew Ng.
- Although they had instant chemistry, their busy lives meant it took them 3 years to go on a date. Not long after that date, they were in love and began planning a wedding.
- The ceremony took place on the backyard cliff of a house they had rented in Carmel, California, and overlooked the ocean. It was a small wedding, with just family and a few friends in attendance.
- They then moved to a local French restaurant for the reception, which Carol says she really tried to make all about the two families coming together.
- One of her favorite parts of the wedding was when she played the wedding songs of all the other couples in attendance throughout the night.
- It took her two months of research to find out about all the songs, but she was happy she did it as it made everyone more a part of her special day.
