Ashwani Lohani is the current chairman and Managing Director of Air India.
Famously nicknamed the ‘Turnaround Man’, he has brought about a sea of change in the numerous industries that he has worked in.
Personal Life : Parents, Family and Education
- Ashwani was born on December 22, 1958, in Kapur, Uttar Pradesh.
- Mr. Lohani is married, but little is known publicly about his family.
- He was educated at the St. Aloysius High School in Kanpur and graduated with the class of 1973.
- He holds a Limca Record for possessing four “Engineering degree equivalents” in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering from the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Jamalpur.
Early Business Career :
- Ashwani is from the 1980s batch of Indian Railways Service officer & became director for the National Rail Museum in 1993. He was awarded National Award for Outstanding Performance by the Ministry of Railways in April 1996.
- 5 years later, he made a career change into tourism and secured the position of Director in the Ministry of Tourism.
- In 2001, Ashwani joined the India Tourism Development Corporation as Chairman & Managing Director in 2001 & is recognized for the upturn of the company under his leadership. He then left from his post in December 2002 for undisclosed reasons.
- Uma Bharti, as the head of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation consulted him in 2003 to revive the exacerbating condition of the company. In 6 years, it won 3 National Tourism Awards and was heralded the “Best tourism performing state in the country.”
Profession and Salary : Later Career
- At the end of 2009, Lohani went back into railway as the Divisional Railway Manager in Delhi Division.
- After two years, he joined the Northern Railways as Chief Mechanical Engineer.
- He returned to Madhya Pradesh as the Commissioner Tourism & Managing Director for MP State Tourism Development Corporation Ltd & made the state one of the leading tourist destinations in India.
- Lohani left and returned to the transportation industry, claiming the post of Chief Administration Officer for the Ministry of Railways, working there for four years.
- He was appointed Chairman & Managing Director of Air India Ltd. in September 2015, where he aspires to once again work his magic for the company.
- He claims that turnaround for the company will happen no later than 2018.

- Mr. Lohani is described as very approachable and positive. His work ethic favors the employees, as he believes happy employees will deliver good service to clients. As an example, a police case was filed against a lawmaker who demanded a business class seat in an all-economy flight and struck an Air India employee recently.
- Ashwani is also a holder of the Guinness Book of World Records for successfully running the world’s oldest working steam locomotive – the “Fairy Queen Express.”
