Oyama was raised in Sydney but moved to Bathurst to pursue her tertiary education.
Nina’s mother hails from Sydney and met her father in Nagoya, Japan, where she was working as an English teacher.

Oyama’s upbringing was heavily influenced by her Japanese roots, and she even learned to speak the language, albeit not fluently.
She is bisexual and has been very vocal about struggling with depression, especially when she was younger.

When she was younger, Nina was very passionate about dance and had a deep obsession with the musical theatre production, ‘Cats.’ Despite working hard to one day star in the production, her career came to a permanent halt after a torn ACL injury left her unable to perform.
At the age of 17, Nina decided to pursue stand-up comedy, and she performed live for the very first time, using a ukulele as a prop.
She got her first major break after being spotted by celebrity, Dan Ilic. He offered her a guest appearance spot on his ‘A Rational Fear’ podcast alongside Chris Taylor and Will Anderson. It wasn’t long till Oyama landed a gig as a writer for the children’s series, ‘You’re Skitting Me.’

After appearing on Ilic’s podcast, Nina was motivated to pursue a career in performance full-time. She moved to Bathurst and attended the Charles Sturt University, later graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre and Media Studies.
After college, Oyama went on to become an intern on the ‘Tonightly with Tom Ballard’ show which was eventually cancelled as well as on the ‘The Chaser’s Election Desk’ show.
She also appeared on a show called ‘About Tonight’ but later revealed that she was not impressed by her material and found it a bit awkward to watch years later.

In 2017, Nina received her biggest break to date after being granted the opportunity to write, star and direct her own series called ‘The Angus Project.’ The series was inspired by her best friend Angus Thompson, whom she met in college. Angus has Cerebral Palsy, and after getting to know each other for a short while, Oyama became his close friend and carer. The Angus Project was part of an initiative called ‘Fresh Blood’, which was run by the ABC network to showcase new talent.
She is still revelling in the success of her web series but aspires to one day have bigger projects and become a household name in comedy, writing and directing for different platforms, including the web, TV and Film.
