Profile :
Once Don Johnson, a famous actor, director and producer, said that “once you become famous, there is nothing left to become but infamous”. In Nihita Biswas’s case this becomes a bit tweaked as she became infamous first and then became famous.
Nihita Biswas came into the public eye after getting married to criminal mastermind and serial killer Charles Shobhraj. Charles revealed in 2008 that he has fallen in love with Nihita who is around 44 years his junior.
Personal Life ::
Nihita Biswas belongs from Nepal. Her mother Shakuntala Thapa, a Nepalese, was a lawyer who was fighting for the case of Charles Sobhraj. Her mother and father, a Bengali, separated when she was a baby. Being close to Maoist Party Thapa was a communist and a feminist. Hence, it doesn’t come as a surprise that after school Nihita studied law.
Marriage with Charles :
Nihita met Sobhraj when he was looking for a French interpreter. It was love at first sight for Charles and he started calling on her at one pretext or another. They soon got married on 9th October 2008, on the day of Bada Dashmi, a sacred day for marriage. Charles’ revelation about their engagement generated a lot of controversies. It wasn’t just because of their age difference but also the fact that Charles was serving a life sentence given by Nepal court for the murder of Connie Jo Bronzich.
Along with this, the rumor was afloat that he had married twice, first with a French woman, Chantal Compagnon with whom he had a daughter (who is older than Nihita). The second time around, he lived with a French woman with Chinese origin with whom he had another daughter. But Nihita refuted these claims and maintained that he had separated from all of them a long time ago. People accused her of marrying him for money and fame. Nihita affirmed her love when she called upon a press conference to ask media to refer from calling Charles a serial-killer as there was no evidence proving him thus. She believes in his innocence.
Career and Professional Life :
Nihita’s claim to fame was her scandalous personal life. One can say that her personal life is a major factor in bringing her from a common man’s obscurity.
Her fame soon led her to become a contestant on the reality show Big Boss 5 in 2011. Her presence in the Big Boss house was rather short as her elimination happened in the first round itself. But despite that, it got scandalous as a contestant, Mandeep Belvi, asked her a risqué question about her sex life involving Charles Sobhraj. Her curiosity soon turned into pestering which poor Nihita tried to avoid. She then clarified that she had no physical relations with him in the 3 years of marriage. Of course, her mother was shocked and angry. The eviction affected Nihita deeply. Her mental state led to psycho-somatic disorders which resulted in swelling and growing paralysis.
After living in Vipassana camp for about 10 days, she started getting better. Since she could not contact anyone from or in the camp, she was flooded with hundreds of messages expressing their support towards her.
Charles persuaded her to give Big Boss a chance as it helped her to give exposure. It indeed gave her publicity as Nepal’s popular film director Yuvraj Lama watched Big Boss because of her. Charles wanted her to enter again through wild card as for him she didn’t get any chance to show her talents. Although she enrolled in law, she also expressed her interest in psychology, philosophy, and filmmaking.
