Introduction :
Mandy Takhar is a British model and actress of Indian Punjabi origin who predominantly stars in Punjabi movies and has also worked in Tamil, Telugu and Bollywood movies. She was born in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom.
Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :
- Mandy Takhar was born Mandeep Kaur Takhar to an Indian Sikh Jatt family settled in Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom. Her father is a businessman and mother, a home maker. She has two sisters who currently hold corporate jobs and are well settled.
- Since a young age, she was interested in acting and modeling and was the only person in her family to do so. She was also a tomboy in school and was the only girl in the boys rugby & football teams in high school. She has also received training in Martial Arts.
- At the age of 17 years, Mandy moved to London to join Kingston University to study Drama and Acting. She later decided to move to Mumbai, India in 2009 to pursue her acting career in the Indian film industry.
- According to Mandy, her family was initially apprehensive of her decision to do so and her mother tried to dissuade her saying ‘Log UK aate hain aur tum India wapas jaa rahi ho settle hone ke liye’ (English: People come to the UK and you arek to India to settle down.)
Career and Rise to Fame :
- Mandy got her first break in the same year that she moved to India. Her first movie was Ekam – Son of soil in which she received positive reviews.
- She subsequently went on to do a high budgeted Punjabi film Mirza – The Untold Story in which she played the lead role of Sahiba, the female counterpart of the tragic love story. She was also nominated for the best actress award at the PTC Punjabi Film Awards. The same year, she made her Bollywood debut with the movie Bumboo, in which she had a sensuous dance sequence.
- She later played the lead role in a comedy film “Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22″ alongside Punjabi actor Amrinder Gill and Actor-Singer Honey Singh. Her role as a teacher won her the award for the most prominent and popular face and youth Icon at the Punjabi Film and Music Festival 2012.
- She bagged the role of the second lead in a Tamil movie ‘Biriyani’ directed by Tamil actor-singer and director Venkat Prabhu. She gained weight for this movie which she did by regularly feasting on Biriyani, a popular south-Indian spicy rice dish; a job she thoroughly enjoyed.
- Her role in the Punjabi film Sardaarji, catapulted her to the position of the top actresses in Punjabi cinema. She also bagged the award for Best Supporting Actress for the same movie. The movie was a mega-hit and went on to break all records in Punjabi cinema.
Achievements and Humanitarian Work :
- Mandy Takhar was nominated for the award for Best Actress for her role in the movie Mirza – The Untold Story and has won the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Sardaarji.
- She has also won the Award for the Most Prominent and Popular Face and Youth Icon in the 6th Punjabi Film and Music Festival.
- Mandy Takhar is associated with Khalsa Aid, an international relief work organization founded on the Sikh principle of selfless service to humanity. In 2016, she personally visited and worked in the relief camps for Kurdish Yazidi refugees in the Northern Iraq- Syria border.
