Valeria Wasserman, a Brazilian native and a lover of the Portuguese language, is a translator at ArtVentures Cultural Projects and Translations. She is currently married to “the father of modern linguistics,” Noam Chomsky.
Education : Qualifications, High School & College Info
- Before becoming a proficient translator, Valeria first went to school to study law and language.
- In 1984, she attended both the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), where she studied law, and the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, where she focused on language studies.
- In 1986, she completed her law studies, and by 1988, she was fluent in translating between English and Portuguese.
- In 1995, however, after a few years of working in various law offices, Valeria went back to school and studied at the Universidade de São Paulo. The Universidade de São Paulo is the largest public university in Brazil, as well as its top educational institution. There, she studied capital market analysis and graduated under that program.
Personal Life and Marriage to Noam :
- In 2014, Valeria married the world-renowned linguist and political commentator Noam Chomsky, often regarded as one of the largest contributors to language theory that has ever lived.
Chomsky :
- Chomsky has been active on both America’s political and intellectual scene since he was a young man. An outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War, Chomsky gained a reputation of being an articulate spokesperson that had a way with words and trends.
- He has published over 100 books in his lifetime, and has written hundreds of scholarly articles and features on language.
- He had one marriage before Wasserman & became a widower after his wife Carol died. Together, Carol & Chomsky had two daughters and one son.
- He currently teaches about linguistics as a professor, and continues to remain politically active.
- The couple is still married, and often travel between Brazil and the United States, where they visit each other’s families.

Law :
- Wasserman got her first legal job in 1992 when she worked as an investment analyst at Unibanco, a large Brazilian bank that merged into Banco Itaú in 2009.
- She then bounced around multiple law offices, usually as a legal assistant.
Translations :
- In October of 2001, Valeria began shifting her focus toward print translations instead of just legal work. She joined the National Association of Magazine Publishers as the director’s assistant.
- After pursuing other interests for a while, she joined ArtVentures in July of 2009 and began translating work between English and Portuguese.
- ArtVentures is a company that works to bring artists of all kinds together, including writers looking for translators, and vice versa.
- She’s translated everything from research papers to full books, including works by David Lehmann, Roberto Varjabedian & Dianne Newell.
Little Faces, LLC :
- During her time pursuing other interests, Wasserman also started her own business, Little Faces, based in Boston, Massachusetts.
- After a few years, however, the company became inactive, and she pursued translations instead.
