- Rai King (maiden name Rai-Tonicia D’vonne Adams) was born on July 16, 1981, in Fayette County, Kentucky. She was raised in Lexington, Kentucky, together with her siblings by her mother, Toni R. Johnson.
- Rai attended a bilingual elementary school and then finished her schooling at the Henry Clay High School in Lexington.
- In 1999, after graduating from Henry Clay High School, Rai relocated to Atlanta where she attended Spelman College until 2004. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development and Elementary Education and Training.
- From 2015 to 2017, Rai also attended Arizona State University, graduating with a Master’s degree in Education.

- In 2014, Rai spent five months in Cape Town, South Africa, as a trainer and curriculum planner for the Boost Africa Foundation.
