- Nahko Bear is an American musician who is also known for his philanthropic pursuits in Native American communities.
Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :
- Nahko was born in Oregon, Portland, and was, unfortunately, the product of marital assault.
- Parents : His biological father was an abusive drunk who routinely assaulted his mother and Nahko’s 3 older siblings. He completely abandoned the family when Nahko was four months old.
- He has acknowledged that his biological mother faced extreme poverty at the time, and she allowed Nahko to be adopted at nine months old so that he would have a better chance at life.
- The family that adopted him were a fundamentalist religious family, who were involved in many musical pursuits in the community. They also actively encouraged Nahko to be involved with his biological mother.
- He has said that his adoptive father, in particular, was a good and strong influence on his life, and encouraged him to take up music as a way of channeling his emotions.
- Nahko was allegedly in a relationship with Hollywood star “Shailene Woodley,” who appeared in the movie “Fault in our Stars.”

- Bear left home as a teenager and used his piano skills taught by his adoptive family to support himself.
- Just before leaving home, he had won a few state-level awards for his piano skills, and this led to him being bombarded with offers.
- This enabled him to save enough money and purchase a van, which he traveled to Alaska in.
- In Alaska, he landed a job as a Music Director at the age of 18. He worked in that role for a year and saved enough to move to Hawaii.
- In Hawaii, he began working as a casual songwriter
- He has said that he could have remained a Music Director in Alaska and probably had a very fruitful career. But, he felt it was important that he get out of that role and use the skills he had learned to focus on his own music, rather than other people’s creations.

- From 2011 to 2012, Nahko traveled around America with his dog in a van and spent time exploring his own culture.
- Nahko Bear Ethnicity & Religion : He is a mixture of Apache, Puerto Rican, and Filipino, however, he has said he mostly associates himself with the Apache side of his family
- By that stage, he had already formed an early version of what would become Nahko and the Medicine People, but that trip really focused him on pursuing it more.
- His aim with the Medicine People is to bridge the cultural divide, and while he is the main member – he has had a rotation of other artists helping him with the project.
- The debut album for the band, ‘Dark as Night,’ was released in 2013 and reached number 4 on the Billboard Alternative Charts.
- He has also created the Nahko Scholarship as an offshoot of the band, which provides Native Americans between the ages of 12 and 18 with $2600 to use for culturally enriching programs.
