Joanna was from New York and was born in 1941. She came from an Italian background.
Her mother’s name was Linda. She had a brother named Peter, both of whom she was very close with.
Joanna’s first husband was Tim Holland. Tim was a professional gambler, golfer, and backgammon champion. She was married to him until 1966. She also had a son with Tim.

After her divorce, Holland began a relationship with the chairman of the Hertz Corporation, & several other successful men.
One of her ex-boyfriends proceeded to sue her, trying to claim back the money he spent on furnishing her apartment. Later Johnny’s lawyer was hired as her attorney to settle the case.

Holland met Johnny one evening at 21 Club when he was dining with Mollie Parnis. She takes credit for introducing the couple to each other.
The couple got married in secret on the afternoon of September 30, 1972. That day was also the 10th anniversary of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Carson made the announcement during the show. It was Johnny’s third marriage and Joanna’s second.
Johnny’s lawyer prepared a prenuptial agreement to protect his assets should a divorce occur. Joanna was ready to sign it, but Johnny thought it was a bad way to begin a marriage, and demanded that the document be torn up.
