Alice Sullivan is the wife of Chuka Harrison Umunna, who is the MP for Streatham in South London since 2010. Chuka was also a member of the Labour Party until 2019, after which he resigned to form “The Independent Group” along with six other MPs.
Alice was introduced to the world as Chuka Umunna’s girlfriend back in 2015 when the couple arrived hand in hand for one of his interviews.

Chuka and Alice’s engagement was announced in a notice in The Times taken out by Alice’s parents.

Alice Sullivan was born in 1984 to Richard Sullivan in Pauntley, Gloucestershire.

Her father, Richard was the director and head of group resources at Xerox. Their family home is a 400-year-old mansion in Gloucestershire, which was bought in 2007. It has its own tennis court and came with 50 chickens and a ram when he bought it.
She studied Politics and graduated from Bristol University and then went on to finish a law conversion course at BPP University in London.
Alice had worked as a trainee at ‘Hogan Lovella’ solicitors in London after which she moved to Chancery law firm ‘Lewis Silkin’ in 2012 and she now specializes in employment law and holds the title of Senior Associate.

Alice and her then boyfriend, Mr. Umunna first appeared in public in May 2015 before he announced his party leadership bid. But just three days after the announcement, Mr. Umunna pulled out of the Labour leadership race because he was uncomfortable with the scrutiny of his personal life including Alice.
This withdrawal from the leadership race can be linked back to Mr. Umunna’s past when his father was killed in a mysterious car crash which some believe to be a ‘political assassination’ as his father had just announced that he was standing to be a governor of a Nigerian state on an anti-bribery platform in 1992. Mr. Umunna was just 13 years old then.

This incident led to Mr. Umunna being very protective of his personal life and of the people close to him.
After his announcement of running for the party leadership position, even Alice’s parents were followed by the press and Mr. Ummana felt that this only happened because of him so he should deal with it.

Chuka Ummuna was criticized for not being married to Alice Sullivan when he first showed her off as his girlfriend. According to “The Conservative Woman” co-editor Laura Perrins, Mr. Ummuna at 36 years was too old to just have a girlfriend and not a wife.
The couple celebrated the birth of their first child, a daughter in 2017.
