- Kathleen’s husband & Jess’s dad Paul Manafort legal troubles put the family under media spotlight. Paul had to deal with charges of tax and bank fraud originating from his work in Ukraine with a pro-Russia political party. This was the first trial the counsellor had to look into Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election, however, most of the subject activity covered in the courtroom dated back a long time before Paul even joined President Donald Trump’s election campaign.
- Paul was found guilty on eight different counts; another ten charges were declared as mistrials as the jury could not seem to reach a unanimous consensus.
- He was also charged with eighteen counts of tax and banking atrocities, and has pleaded not guilty to every single charge.

- In 2018, other Manafort family members also stood trial – Kathleen’s ex-son-in-law Yohai pleaded guilty to criminal charges in reference to receiving real estate loans and agreed to cooperate in federal investigations.
- A California bank executive questioned ex-son-in-law Jeffrey Yohai Yohai about a one million dollar loan Pual Manafort acquired in 2016 to assist Yohai in ‘flipping’ luxury homes in Los Angeles. Prosecutors stated Paul lied about his annual income and hid some of his debt to secure the loan.
- During Paul’s investigation, his accountant James Ayliff was called to the stand. Ayliff testified that he had asked Paul if he owned any foreign bank accounts to which he told ‘no.’
- He had to examine a list of fifteen Cyprus entities and Ayliff admitted that he thought they were Paul’s clients or was not familiar with them altogether.
- At this point, Kathleen stormed out of the courtroom, looking visibly upset.

- The Manafort residence in Virginia was actually raided while the couple were in bed together. The FBI agents stormed in with guns and even insisted on searching Kathleen for weapons. While this was quite a drastic precautionary, it is also a standard part of FBI searches.
- Kathleen’s daughter Jessica legally changed her name to Jessica Bond after her father’s investigation. She stated ‘I need to separate myself and my career from the public eye that has nothing to do with the person that I am.’
