Personal Life : Parents, Family and Education
- Burns grew up with a tight-knit family in Saginaw, Michigan, and was raised alongside her siblings – A brother and sister. She always had a close relationship with her family and grew under the positive influence of her aunts, who were roughly the same age as her.
- When she was younger, Candace was close to her dad, a police officer. She says that even though her father was overprotective, that care and concern kept her on the right path. It kept her focused on her schooling and other goals.
- Candace’s grandmother was also a good influence on her, being both a missionary and pastor.
- As a child, she did not always want to be a journalist. In high school, she thought about becoming a dentist or even a model. But this changed when the school implemented a program called Auther Hill Network News”. This allowed students to operate a newscast with the shooting of after school events and even live newscasts during homeroom. After being a part of this, Burns realized how much she enjoyed this field and decided to pursue it as a full-time career.
- After attending Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, Burns went to Wichita State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism. While in college, she was a scholarship athlete of the women’s basketball team, as well as the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the National Association of Black Journalists.

- Early in her career, Burns chose to stay close to home to be close to her family. She got a job reporting at WLNS in Lansing, Michigan, and then worked somewhere in northern Michigan where she found herself doing various tasks at the station. She anchored, reported, and even produced newscasts.
- In 2010, Candace relocated to Flint, Michigan, to take a position at ABC12 News before deciding that she was ready to move on. She worked in Flint for a little over four years. Later, Burns hired an agent to help her with her search, and this led to her landing her current job in Virginia.
