- Tom studied Journalism at RMIT University in Melbourne. He got his degree while working as a reporter for WIN News in Ballarat.
- In 2007, he joined Nine News in Melbourne. He won the Young Journalist of the Year Award of the Melbourne Press and was also nominated for a ‘Walkley Award’ for his coverage of major news stories such as the Black Saturday bushfires.
- In 2010, Steinfort moved to Sydney to join the weeknights show A Current Affair. There, he contributed to the acclaimed investigation into the sexual abuse committed by actor Robert Hughes, on the set of the sitcom Hey Dad!.
