Early Life and Education :
- Ann was born on November 4, 1983 right outside Ballarat in a little area called Scotsburn. At that time, Scotsburn didn’t even have a shop and when Ann started primary school there, there were only 25 students in the whole school.
- Very interested in learning another language (even speaking Spanish in her sleep!), Ann completed her 12th grade in Santiago, Chile, and learned Spanish.
- Dr Ann Jones Qualifications : Her experience in Chile led her into studying Latin American history and politics which took her down the path of getting a PhD on the Pinochet regime.
- Ann had no plans to get into radio when she was doing her PhD at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. But at a conference, she met a producer from ABC, who insisted her thesis be turned into a documentary.
- Soon, Jones realised that radio was a difficult field to find a steady job in so she studied broadcasting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), which was famous for its high employment rate.

- After Ann finished studying broadcasting, she started her professional journey at a regional radio in Port Pirie, SA and later spent some years as a local radio presenter in SA and Victoria.

- Ann lived on a hobby farm with her parents and two older brothers. Always an outdoorsy child, Ann did lots of activities like sports and ballet. Ann also did a lot of bike riding and cubby building while growing up and she has very fond memories of berry picking around the stone fences in Scotsburn. She calls her childhood a “typical privileged white girl upbringing.”
- When Ann was 10, her stepdad, Gary, came into her life and had a huge influence on her. Gary was born and raised in Daylesford and was always into nature. The two would go on weekend picnics and birdwatching well into her teenage years.
- Every school holiday until she went to university, Ann would spend them with her grandparents. They owned a vineyard for table grapes. It was here that she saw a frill necked lizard for the first time which she mentions had a huge impact on her.
