- Brooke Boney is an Australian television personality and news presenter. While still at the early stages of her career, she is already one of the most successful indigenous media presenters in the country.

- Brooke Boney is Gamilaroi Gomeroi woman who grew up in Muswellbrook. Muswellbrook is a small town in Hunter Valley, New South Wales, with a population of around 12,000 people.
- Growing up, she lived with her mother and five younger siblings.
- During Boney’s childhood there were no indigenous people on radio and television, which became a motivation for her to start a career as a journalist.
- She considers her position as a television personality to be that of a role model for other indigenous youth.

- During high school, Boney volunteered at a community radio station, & even worked for Australian Financial Review.
- Boney dropped out of high school before graduating and she was slightly disappointed in doing so. However, she made her return to her studies at university and started her media career.
- During her studies at university, Boney studied journalism. She also worked as a press correspondent for National Indigeous Television, where she reported from the press box in Parliament. She would also produce the Blackchat program of Koori Radio, based in Sydney.

- During her time at Triple J, Boney would open her segment with “Yaama,” which is “hello” in Gamilaroi, the language of the Indigenous people of New South Wales.
- Boney believes in slow change, feeling that these things need to take time and not to be forced upon people as a fast change. For her, the fact that she, as an Gamilaroi, is reporting on a prominent news channel is already a huge step. She is excited that when her niece, for example, turns on the television, she will not only see two women reporters, but also one of her own ethnicity.
- She was named “Top Talent To Watch In 2018” by Radio Today, Australia.
Controversies :
- In 2019, there was some controversy over her views about Australia Day and its celebration on January 26, the official day Australia was colonised.
- As an Australian she loves her country, but does not believe this day is the one worth celebrating. She feels it would be better to celebrate Australia Day on January 1st which is the anniversary of Australia’s Federation.
I too think she does a great job. I never used to think there was an issue with Australia Day being celebrated on 26th January, but just the little statement in her Bio about the day being celebrated on the 1st January (Australian Federation anniversary) instead may have changed my thinking.
