  • Her neighborhood was predominantly white & she always had difficulty making friends, which led her to be shy and reclusive.

Adulthood :

  • After deciding to try and land a job at that radio station, Yes worked to overcome her shyness and bounced around the California area working.
  • While doing so, she received word from her family that her sister’s six kids, three boys and three girls, had been taken by Child Protective Services.
  • She spent the next few years grappling with California’s foster care system until, at age 25, she was finally able to adopt all six of them. She later fostered another child and adopted them, bringing her total to 7.

  • With no plans to go off to a university and with uncertainty about how to begin a career, she signed up and went to the Academy of Radio and Television Broadcasting.
  • She graduated in the late 1990s and began her career immediately.

  • After finally gaining custody of her nieces and nephews, Ortiz returned to California and began co-hosting a morning show on Channel 933 called AJ’s Playhouse.
  • In 2006, with the help of her old Las Vegas mentor, she contacted Power 106 and asked if she’d be able to meet with someone in the hopes of filling any positions that might open up in the future. They agreed and liked her interview so much that they gave her a spot hosting their mid-day show.
