Sonia Sunger is a second-generation Canadian born on February 5th, in Victoria, British Columbia.
She is of South Asian (from India) descent and speaks fluent Punjabi, in addition to English.
She has an older sister, Simi. She is very close to her sis and would frequently ask her for advice while growing up.

Sonia went to Claremont High School in Victoria and graduated in 2003.
She then went to study a degree in Journalism from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. After moving to Edmonton, Canada, she completed her studies at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, where she graduated with honours from their Radio and Television Arts program.
In 2016, Sonia got engaged to Chris Koch. She married Chris Koch on September 10th, 2016, in Bad Saarow, Germany, where Chris is originally from. Their honeymoon involved travelling from Germany to Greece, as well as spending some time in Italy.

In May 2020, Sonia delivered her first baby – her son Hugo was born in May 2020. She had made the official announcement of her pregnancy on Global BC in November 2019.
Sonia currently resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with her growing family.

Sonia’s passion for broadcast journalism earned her an internship at CTV Edmonton in 2006 that she quickly followed with a permanent role there. She initially started working at CTV as a writer, then made her way to becoming an anchor and reporter. Sonia remained at CTV Edmonton until November 2012.

In 2013, Sonia returned to British Columbia, where she joined the new 24-hours news channel BC1 as a weekday anchor.
Since October 2016, Sunger has been a host and anchor for Global BC’s morning show.

Sonia knew from an early age that she wanted to become a journalist. She spent her childhood and teenage years watching the Oprah Winfrey Show, 20/20 with Barbara Walters, 60 Minutes and a lot of news and talk shows.
During her high school years, she spent time observing and learning the intricacies of the newsroom while shadowing at Victoria’s Chek 6 TV station. She also created a TV show, hosted a radio show, and travelled to Calgary at the age of 16 to take part for a day in the broadcast journalism program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
Sonia loves travelling and frequently goes on trips with her husband Chris Koch.

When Sonia was only eight years old, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. She has gone on to beat cancer three times ever since and has travelled the world with Sonia’s father. Sonia frequently donates her hair to raise funds for cancer research.
Sonia has always had an inquisitive and curious nature, and she states that her parents encouraged her to question the world. They also empowered her to follow her own path and make her own career choices.
