Introduction :

Rebecca Morelle, also known as Becky Morelle, is a British global science journalist working for BBC World Service. She is also credited with co-founding the Australian Science Media Centre (AusSMC).

Education and Early Career :

  • Morelle graduated from Goffs School, now known as Goffs Academy. She went on to learn Chemistry in Oxford University, graduating in 2001.
  • Soon after completing her education, Rebecca started working at the Royal Institution in September 2001. She began in the Fundraising department and then the Director’s office before getting an appointment at the Science Media Centre in December of the same year. Morelle was promoted to senior press officer in 2004.
  • Morelle was the first recipient of the “Ivan Noble” bursary from the BBC. The bursary allowed her to work closely with the BBC specialist team in science and technology. Ivan Noble was a technology reporter who had an untimely death in 2005, at the age of 37.

  • Rebecca has been with the BBC since 2005. She has had a long and illustrious career there, reporting on scientific news worldwide. She reported the 2017 solar eclipse on location and did a live report on the Cassini mission to Saturn.
  • Together with Stuart Denman, Morelle won the prestigious AAAS Kavli award, an award to honour distinguished professional reporting in science, engineering and mathematics. Morelle and Denman won the 2016 Gold Award for Television: Spot News/Feature Reporting, for their spot on primer on the Paris climate conference.

Scary Incident at Mt. Etna :

  • While reporting on the activity on Mount Etna, Rebecca was one of the ten BBC film crew members who were caught up in the Mt. Etna eruption.
  • The crew was filming when there was a lot of volcanic activity, and plumes of smoke and steam erupted from the live volcano. The team managed to run from the scene though it was difficult to see where they were going. They finally found a vehicle that could take them down the volcano.
  • Rebecca tweeted the ordeal on her official @BBCMorelle account. She described the panic they felt like “running down a mountain pelted by rocks, dodging burning boulders and boiling steam.” She reported that many were injured – thankfully, only with superficial head injuries, burns, cuts and bruises. It was an ‘extremely scary’ experience which she did not want to go through again.
  • Morelle had also appeared in the TV quiz show “University Challenge” as a representative and alumni from St. Anne’s college. She had described appearing there as the scariest thing ever including her escape from Mt. Etna.
