- Marney was born on October 4, 1973, to parents Duane (father) and Lola Gellner (mother) in Langdon, North Dakota.
- When Marney was six years old, the family moved to Minot, North Dakota. Her parents moved again in 2006 to Fargo.
- Marney has two siblings – one older and one younger brother. The older Rob and his family live in Grafton, North Dakota, while the younger brother, Ryan, and his family live in West Fargo.
- Gellner is married to her husband, Matt Mathiasen, who originally hails From St. Cloud, Minnesota. The two first met through mutual friends. Matt is a graduate of the University of North Dakota with a major in accounting. He has worked at the Dakotah Ice Center in Prior Lake, Minnesota, as an ice arena manager for well over a decade.

- After working for many years, Gellner went back to school in 2012 and graduated from North Dakota State University with a Master’s degree in Communications.

- After graduating from university, Marney started working as a weekend sports anchor for KXMB TV for a year and a half. She then moved on to work at WDAZ-TV for two years & then WISC-TV for three years.
- In 2002, Gellner joined Fox Sports as a pregame show host, and courtside reporter for the Minnesota Timberwolves telecasts & has worked there ever since. She is also the sidelines reporter and pregame/postgame host for the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Wild broadcasts and also for Golden Gopher men’s hockey telecasts.
- When Marney first started her career, it was far rarer to have women working in sports. For some reason, it didn’t really phase her. She didn’t think of herself as ‘unique’ or, a trailblazer…she just liked sports and broadcasting and knew that the job fit her well.
- In 2018, Gellner became only the second woman to call play-by-play in an NBA televised game. The last woman to have this opportunity was Leandra Reilly in 1988. Marney was also the first woman to call out a game for Minnesota Twins broadcast with her own home run call, “Better Call Mama.”

Marnie, I have listened to your post-game interviews with Twins players and I frequently feel so bad for the Spanish speaking game stars. The questions leave them with awkward moments trying to piece together a pat answer.
If you spoke Spanish and could interpret an interesting response or have an interpreter on hand to help the players would be able to actually reflect intelligently about the game.
