  1. Retired editor of global news agency

Her story on ageing, pensions in China: excellent choice of subject, of critical importance for the rest of the worl, well written and, exceptionally for the BBC, not a single error of grammar, syntax and vocabulary, so on a par with standards by Kate Adie and Hugh Schofield

  2. North Korea having these rockets has saved them from being bombed or invaded by the USA and vassals. Not sure why the USA or anyone else can dictate who has these weapons of mass destruction if they have (and used) themselves. Time the BBC reported on those issues as well as the tired view of ‘we are right they are wrong’. Mind you this would hasten the BBC’s demise.

  3. As with all BBC reporters, her stories are objective and enjoyable. It is a pleasure listening to her relating a story, but being Scottish myself, perhaps I’m a tad biased.

  4. Laura Bicker is a fantastic journalist and should be made chief political reporter. As i reckon, Laura does a fantastic job!

  5. Sadly, Laura’s reporting on North Korean issues are typically second hand, speculative, inherently subjective, and invariably off target.

Question: Has she ever crossed the border and spent time in the North gathering the kind of journalistic stories that both foster learning and challenge the thinking of its readers? I thought that’s what being a journalist is all about. Maybe it’s a crazy expectation that a BBC journalist could access the North.

During the 1990s, I made two extended visits to North Korea-both over several weeks-on behalf of UK based international NGOs; the first assessing the humanitarian impact on children from a reported tidal wave in the country’s coastal areas and the second, two years later, leading a nation-wide review of over ten institutions – labelled ‘asylums’ – for older people. Amidst a plethora of official encounters as well as informal meetings across large swathes of the country, I recall long conversations with officials about their individual and family lives, their adherence to the principles and practices of Juche, their preferences for Scottish whisky and American cigarettes, and a deep curiosity about my life back home in London. I’m also recalling spending a day on the Pyongyang metro – entirely on my own, I should add – during my second stay in the country. Moving around this unknown environment replete with its magnificent stations and ostentatious wall paintings, I was received with considerable warmth and courtesy by its many users. In such simple and mundane settings, there’s so much more to talk about – and to report on – than the predictably unsubstantiated and politically biased stories served up by Laura from her safe base in the South. Surely, referring to her reporting as ‘journalism’ does a grave disservice to this long, courageous and honest profession.

  6. I have always liked watching Laura ( Bicker) always fair, to point and where needed
asks the questions in certain circumstance or origin, even if close to. Laura a top
class reporter that I respect any report for, but why Laura got moved suddenly TO
South Korea Office post Women asking for same pay as male colleagues in B. B. C., and a head of Northern America B. B. C. ( Jon Sopel) refusing take pay cut in light of.
And, why does, a B. B. C. Send female lead from Berlin to Japan!!! report on virus when
already reporter their, we paying for travel for lodging, Why, we have reporter their.
Laura ( Bicker) says she has hardest job all, on top being female in a male dominated over ego world, Laura has produce radio and less the bulletin for
    B. B. C. visual news due the state imposure of reporting ad every report during
filming shadowed then re checked for broad cast.

I WISH NOMINATE Laura Bicker, for an award, the Kate Adie for showing above beyond
    through every day.

      1. Hi Chris,

You criticise for someone hating Trump and being “agenda driven”. Ha ha ha. What a laugh.

Even if that was true, it would make her a good person in my opinion.

        All the best mate.

        P. P.

      2. Richard Wainwright

If she hates eveything about Trump, for me that’s excellent!!
Thank the Lord he has gone.
        March 27th 2021.

  7. Laura made her journalistic name in Scotland with her coverage of the Clutha Bar Helicopter disaster in Glasgow. Informative, sensitive, respectful without being sensational.
. She is a class act in my eyes, I wish her all the best.

  8. Dr Kenneth Dodanwatawana

Great personal success story despite the perennial obstacles of being female, and from an average Family. Well done, Ma’am !
