- Kristen was born and raised in South Carolina. The eldest daughter in her family, she has two younger siblings – Scott & Katie.
- She has always loved nature and is an avid stargazer. Her love of the sky and the spontaneity of weather led her to begin a career in meteorology.
- When she is not in the studio, Kristen enjoys hiking and mountain biking.
- Since she has family in Utah, she has also learned to snowboard there. She often takes her two dogs, Ranger and Harper, when she explores Utah’s deserts.
- Kristen Van Dyke is married. She got hitched in Dec 2018 to her husband, Tom Nelson. The wedding ceremony & reception took place at Salt Lake City Country Club. In January 2020, she gave birth to her first child, a baby boy named Wilson. In August 2021, she had another son, named James.

- Kristen first went to college in 2000 at a South Carolina-based school – The College of Charleston. Founded in 1770, it is one of the nation’s oldest schools and takes pride in the history that surrounds both it and the city it was built in.
- In 2005, Van Dyke graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Media Studies.
- In 2006, she enrolled in school again, this time at the Mississippi State University, one of the largest universities in the South. She graduated in 2009 with another Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences.
- After gaining her Geoscience degree, she earned an American Meteorological Society (AMS), or AMS ‘Seal of Approval’.
TV Career, Job, Salary and Net Worth :
The South :
- In 2006, Van Dyke also began working for WPDE, a local news station that covers areas in both South Carolina and Florida.
- She was hired as a Weekend Meteorologist, and worked there until September of 2010, one year after she graduated.
New Mexico :
- In July of 2010, Van Dyke moved to Albuquerque and began hosting a New Mexico-based show for both KRQE News 13 and KASA Fox 2 called ‘New Mexico Style,’ where she covered lifestyle news and local features. Today, the segment is called ‘New Mexico Living’.
- In July of 2010, she also became the morning and noon meteorologist for both the stations. She remained in that position for another three years before leaving in April of 2014.
Oregon & Utah :
- In 2014, Van Dyke became the Chief Meteorologist at the CBS affiliate KOIN 6. In May 2017, she left the station for family & personal reasons.
- In May 2017, she began broadcasting for KSTU Fox 13, instead, and worked to be their Chief Meteorologist until July 2020.

- All the days spent in the sun caught up to her as she was diagnosed with early-level melanoma. Luckily, due to early diagnosis, she was able to treat & beat it.
- As a child, Kristen’s home was hit by one of the biggest hurricanes at the time. Though it scared her a lot at the time, it eventually sparked her interest in tracking the weather.

My husband and I have missed you. We did not see you for a while before our cable career was not going to carry channel 13. When it came back on, you have not been there. Have you left the 13 News Team? I do hope not. My husband and I loved your presentation of the weather, always so upbeat, and always a smile. Our favorite was when Baby Wilson left his Mark on you, and you quickly grabbed your jacket. We have laughed about that many times…You are a breath of fresh air at these times and always. Please tell us you are not leaving. Thanks from the Swasey’s in Spring City.
