- After attending Mercy High School in her hometown, Kerry went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree in communication from the University of Michigan, graduating in 1993.
- She was a member of the varsity softball team, including during the 1992 season when the girls won the Big Ten Championship for the first time in school history.

- Following an internship, Kerry began her reporting career in 1994 at WILX-TV in Lansing, Michigan. Doing general assignments, she got her lucky break in sports reporting while taking a tour of the station; In conversation with male interns and employees, she proved that she knew what she was talking about and got offered a job in the sports department.
- In 1999, Kerry started a job as an anchor and reporter with the (now defunct) Empire Sports Network in Buffalo, New York. She remained with the company for two years.

- Although Kerry has moved away from sports in her career, they are still a huge part of her life. In addition to running marathons, practicing yoga, and playing golf, she has also completed her first Tough Mudder.
- Not the only athlete in the household, Kerry’s husband played varsity football and baseball at his alma mater, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute — all while making the Dean’s List each semester.
- Her first assignment as a sports reporter was to go into the Detroit Lions’ locker room during training camp and interview players. Already overwhelmed as a newcomer, she told a class at the Illinois Center for Broadcasting that her nerves were amplified since the players were all in “various states of undress.
