Introduction :
Judy Hsu, a 16 time Emmy Award Nominee, is a Taiwanese origin lady who anchors the 11 AM News with Terrell Brown and 4 PM News with Rob Elgas on the ABC7 network. She is also the host of a Sunday morning show called “Newsviews.”
Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :
- Judy was born in Taipei, Taiwan. At the age of 11, her family immigrated to Chicago, USA.
- Parents : Judy’s father was a well-known Grand Master of Tai Chi. Her mother was a housewife, keeping the household in order.
- Due to the fact that Judy’s father was a well-known Tai Chi master, he was invited to teach this Chinese martial art in Chicago. Soon after, Judy and her mom followed him to the USA.
- Chicago was turbulent at the time. The family moved from Chinatown to Rogers Park, to Morton Grove.
- Currently, Judy is married to her husband, Tracy, with whom she has four children – two daughters and two sons. During her fourth pregnancy, she became national news as her baby was born on Chicago’s Eisenhower Expressway. One of her daughters, Samantha, has been part of Salt Creek Ballet since she the age of 5.

- Hsu attended various Chicago Public Schools, working hard on her English-speaking proficiency.
- In the northern suburbs of Morton Grove, she attended junior high & high school while also performing Tai Chi demonstrations around the area with her family.
- Judy showed interest in journalism as a freshman at Niles West High School, where she joined the high-school newspaper. She loved it so much that, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, she majored in Broadcast Journalism.
TV Career, Job, Salary and Net Worth :
- While at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Hsu did two internships: the first for a semester with former WBBM Ch. 2 anchor Walter Jacobsen, and the second with the CBS affiliate in Champaign-Urbana during her last year in college. The day after graduating, Judy said that the same affiliate offered her a job as a General Assignment Reporter.
- First “big” job she got was in a station in San Diego. From being a reporter, she transitioned to an anchor of the station’s weekday 4 PM newscast.
- In April of 2001, Judy was offered a job as a morning anchor at Channel 7, Chicago’s top-rated station. She accepted.
- After 15 years of being a morning anchor, she finally became a prime-time news anchor at ABC7, Chicago.
Interesting Facts, Height and Trivia :
- While pregnant with her fourth child, Judy went into labor in the middle of the night. It was 3 AM and her husband, Tracy, wanted to take her to Northwestern Hospital. However, they didn’t reach it since the baby wanted to “go out” sooner. They pulled over on the side of the road, and Hsu remembered a segment she did on a similar childbirth situation. The parents tied off the umbilical cord with shoelaces. They also tried it, and it worked!
- In August 2018, Judy shared the passing of her father, Grand Master Fun Yuen Hsu, renowned for his dedication to Chinese Martial Arts. Originating from a farming village in Southern China, Fun endured war and spent his early years training under the esteemed Master Cheng Man-chi’ing. Settling in Chicago, he established his Tai Chi Academy, teaching values of hard work, honor, and family. Despite retiring in his 80s, health challenges like stroke and diabetes prompted him to return to his homeland. Wren took some time off to bid her father a final goodbye.
- Besides English, Judy is fluent in her native Mandarin.
