- Johanna Nicholson (maiden name Johanna Ruth Hatcher) was born on January 21, 1987, in Adelaide, Australia, to parents Leigh Hatcher (father, a veteran in the world of Australian broadcasting), and Meredith Hatcher (mother).
- She has three siblings, Tristan Hatcher (elder brother), Amy Hatcher Watson (elder sister), and Sophie Hatcher (younger sister).
- From 2006 to 2010, Johanna attended the Macquarie University in Sydney. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Government.
