- Gregory Palkot was born in 1954 in Garden City, New York, to Edward J. Palkot (father) and Anne Karris Palkot (mother). Anne Karris passed away in 1998, while Edward passed away in 2022.
- Greg has two sisters, Barbara Hymans and Patricia Abdellatif, and a brother, Edward Palkot Jr.
- Greg grew up in Garden City, New York, and attended Garden City High School. He graduated in 1972.

- Greg’s father, Edward J. Palkot, passed away at 108.5 years old in February 2022. He is also a survivor of the 1918 flu pandemic (more known by the misnomer Spanish flu). Edward was only five years old when he contracted the disease, but he managed to escape its clutches. Edward was featured in ‘Aging Gracefully,’ a book that spotlights 52 centenarians from around the world
- Greg’s very first assignment as a foreign correspondent was to travel to Berlin in 1989, where he got to witness the historic fall of the Berlin wall. Greg kept a piece of the wall which he still proudly displays on his desk.
