Colin Young is a British personality who is best known for his work with the BBC’s auction-based program Bargain Hunt.

Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :

Colin grew up in the Lincolnshire area and was especially close to his father as a child.
He had a keen interest in cars from a young age, a hobby he inherited from his father. He initially even dreamt of becoming a mechanic.
Young has said that he was a sporty child but that his sense of humour had a knack for getting him into trouble.

Education : Qualifications, High School & College Info

After finishing high school, Colin attended Stamford College & completed his qualification in General and Mechanical Engineering. However, due to it being a small location, he was not able to secure ongoing work in that area.
Instead, he returned to study in 1989, his time at The College of Estate Management. He graduated in 1991 with a certificate in Fine Arts and Chattels.

He then went on to attend the Wakefield College, where he gained his valuation grade in 1992.

Early Work and Life before TV Fame :

After failing to gain mechanical work in 1986, he accepted a job as the assistant manager with Lyall & Co at their Bourne Auction Rooms.

This was his first foray into the auction world, and he didn’t really choose the job – he simply went for the only job he could get at the time. Luckily, he grew to love it.
After working there for three years, he partnered with some work colleagues to open their own auction and valuation house in 1989.
The business was called Golding, Young and Mawyer and has offices in Grantham, Lincoln, and Stamford. He still owns a part of the company & acts as a valuer from time to time.

TV Career, Job, Salary and Net Worth :

Young’s success with his own business caught the eye of BBC. He was invited to do a screen test for their show Bargain Hunt in Autumn of 2002.
He failed to secure a role for himself but was invited back to the studio a few months later to assist with a Christmas special. He impressed them enough that they gave him the original role they had rejected him for.

Since 2009, he has also freelanced as a consultant for Nationwide Disposals Agency, helping when they find interesting items on job sites.

Interesting Facts and Trivia :

Young has been married for over 20 years and has a daughter named Kirsty. Kirsty is a self-described “daddy’s girl”. She has worked at Colin’s auction firm in a junior role. He has said he showed her no favouritism in the hiring process, and she blew everyone away, making him extremely proud.
Colin is a collector of vintage cars and motorbikes. He has said his favourites are his 1050cc Triumph Sprint motorbike & his bright orange Focus ST car.

I’ve just today seen Colin Young on Bargain Hunt and couldn’t believe my eyes.

What a transformation from the short-haired, suit-wearing and, dare I say, good-looking guy. Now resembling a hippy from the 1960s with long hair and shirt hanging out. What went wrong?

Can I ask why Colin wears a fox brooch? I am very anti hunting and hope Colin is too and that’s why he wears it, however might be because he pursues hunting. Please let me know.

  Today, 23rd January 2023, Colon looks entirely different. Short hair and a beard. Looks a lot older, but still has a lovely smile!
