Wikipedia Bio / Profile Background

Introduction :

Catriona Renton is an ex-Glasgow city councillor, BBC news reporter and presenter who focuses on political commentary.

Career in Politics :

  • Catriona’s first foray into politics was when she was studying at Balliol College, a constituent college of the University of Oxford. As part of her course studies, she worked for an MEP in Brussels.
  • Her first job after graduation was working for ex-Labour MP Dennis Canavan.
  • In 1998, Catriona was a first-time delegate in Blackpool from the Glasgow Kelvin constituency.
  • Renton made news after she attended her first Labour conference where she spoke not once but twice in an environment where older delegates still await their chance to speak for the first time.
  • In 1999, Catriona won Glasgow’s Kelvindale seat and became one of only two Scottish women councillors under the age of 30. While still on the council, she also held a full-time job as a campaigner for Oxfam. She held the seat until 2003 when she lost the seat to the Liberal Democratic Party.
  • Catriona then went on to contest as a candidate in both the 2003 Holyrood elections and the 2004 European elections but wasn’t successful.

Broadcasting Career : Job, Salary and Net Worth :

  • In 2006, Renton was then recruited by BBC Scotland’s parliamentary unit. Here, John Boothman, husband of Labour MSP and ex-Health Minister Susan Deacon, was a senior producer.
  • Her Labour Councillor past has been brought up numerous times in her discussions & talks on BBC.
  • Catriona found herself in controversy while filming at the SNP conference in Inverness. She had claimed on a BBC Scotland’s political show that Alex Neil had confirmed the SNP’s desire to see David Cameron become the Prime Minister at the next general election. The recorded interview with Mr Neil that followed Catriona’s claim contained no such confirmation. BBC later issued a personal apology to him after that.

Fun Facts, Height and Trivia :

  • Back in the late 1990s, Renton was one of the youngest councillors in the Glasgow City Council. She even helped push forth the policy of making swimming pools free for all under 18 people.
  • At Oxford, she studied French & German.
  • A few years back, Catriona fell victim to a Twitter (now called X) prank when news of Leslie Nielsen’s death swept the social media platform for the second time, five years after his death. She tweeted out a link to the original BBC report of his death with the caption, “I loved his films. Comedy genius. Leslie Nielsen, comic actor and Airplane star, dies.”
