- Caton was raised in Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs and is the daughter of Cathie Atkinson (mother) and horse trainer and horse racing expert, Raymond Metzler (father).
- She was one of the two children born to her parents and has a younger sister named Johanna.
- When Caton was born, her dad was a schoolteacher who trained a couple of horses on the side. He swiftly moved out of teaching and took a job as farm manager at a farm in Libertyville, Illinois.

- Eventually, in 1987, Bredar graduated from Knox College in Illinois with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Writing. She also minored in Secondary English Education and spent her summers working at the horse tracks.
