- Parents : She is the daughter of the esteemed British Diplomat Sir Donald Hawley, who was knighted in 1978 for his services to his country throughout his diplomatic career.

- In 1994, she began working as a newsroom journalist for the BBC World Service and it was that position that launched her highly loyal career with the network.
- From there she was posted to Cairo to become a correspondent in 1999.
- On the back of a successful stint in Cairo, she was then posted to Jordan in 2001.
- She was officially appointed as BBC’s Middle East Correspondent towards the beginning of 2006. This was another position in which she received international recognition for her honest coverage of events within Middle Eastern countries.
- Since 2007, she has actively worked as a Special Correspondent for BBC and has made it known that she has no plans in changing her role due to her enjoyment of it.
Controversies and Interesting Facts :
- During 2002, she began working as a Baghdad correspondent and it was during this post that she was famously expelled from the country of Iraq.
- Physically removed from the country at the height of Saddam Hussein’s infamy, she was told she would not be able to return to the country regardless of her journalism credentials. However, after Saddam was removed from power in 2003 – she has since been able to return to the country.
