Wikipedia Biography / Profile Background

Introduction :

Annita McVeigh is a Northern Irish news presenter who currently works for BBC News in London, England.

Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :

  • Annita was born in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. She attended school in Dungannon and later graduated from college in 1991. Growing up on a farm on the outskirts of Armagh, she was the only child of parents Gerry and May, who are sadly now both deceased. Gerry passed away because of a heart attack when Annita was 18. May passed away in a nursing home around 2015, after suffering from dementia.
  • After meeting at the 5th anniversary party for BBC News 24, Annita married BBC manager Martin Reid in 2004. Martin is originally from Hartlepool.
  • When Martin and Annita first met, he had never travelled to Northern Ireland. However, he fell in love with it immediately and was impressed by the warm people and their welcoming attitude.
  • The couple now has two kids together – A 16-year-old daughter and 14-year old son(ages as of 2024). The family now resides in Hertfordshire, England, with their kids, and their Old English Setter named Hudson.
  • Annita’s children are much fascinated by her Northern Ireland roots and her accent.

Early Life and Education :

  • From a very early age, Annita knew that she wanted to be a newscaster. Part of her influence came from knowing two girls whose fathers had been shot and killed and wanting to be able to tell those stories.
  • Despite growing up on a farm, Annita’s parents encouraged her to follow her dreams. They allowed her to start watching the news at just 10-years-old (something that she encourages in her own kids) and they enrolled her in elocution, singing and drama classes.
  • The speech and drama lessons definitely helped her in building her public speaking skills and gave her the confidence needed to work on her future career.
  • McVeight met her best friend, Tricia, while attending Sister of Mercy Primary School.
  • The two later went on to the same university, where they lived in the same dormitory and later in the same house. Still close to this day, they are godmothers to one of each other’s children.
  • In 1991, Annita graduated from Queen’s University Belfast with a Bachelor’s degree in English and Politics.

Career, Job, Salary and Net Worth :

  • Getting a head start on her career, Annita first wrote for the school newspaper.
  • After graduating from university, she wrote for local publications, The Tyrone Courier in Dungannon and The Ulster Gazette – the largest circulated newspaper in the Armagh city district. Following those stints, she worked as a freelancer for BBC in Belfast, then for BBC Newsline as a reporter and occasional presenter. Eventually, she was promoted to the position of BBC Ireland correspondent.
  • In 2002, Annita got the opportunity to work as a news correspondent for BBC at their headquarters in London. Initially, hired to fill in while another reporter was on maternity leave, Annita has been at the London location ever since.
  • Currently, she works as a main presenter on BBC Newsroom Live and as a main relief presenter on BBC Weekend News.

Fun Facts, Height and Trivia :

  • In 2017, Annita joined a group of fellow BBC colleagues that publicly challenged their workplace in fighting for equal pay for its female employees.
  • Known for her calm and cool demeanour on air, she says those who know her would describe her as “warm and bubbly.”
  • When she is not in the studio, Annita is quite involved with her children’s education. She is an acting school governor, with a special focus on literacy.
  • Often mistaken for being younger than she is, she attributes it to her religious use of a strong SPF and the fact that she has never smoked in her life.
  • For her relaxation, Annita loves watching the UK version of the business reality show, The Apprentice.

  2. Watching Annita this morning on BBC news to see her name is McVeigh the Irish spelling the same as mine (McVeigh) myself born in Northern Ireland to find out she was born in NI Armagh and grew up on a farm. Inspiring how she came from a farm in NI to become the main news reporter on BBC Newsroom live. Good luck Annita I love watching you 🙂

  3. Absolutely brilliant at her job, she has no equal. In spite of the usually sad content and constant repetition I look forward to viewing BBC News.

    Dear Annita McVeigh,

This is intended for BBC TV mention:

What has become of driverless lorries? Not long ago the media told us they were imminent. That would have deterred many people from entering this occupation, worsening the present shortage.

    Best wishes from

  5. I grew up on a farm one mile from Annita’s. Remember her father Gerry very well. He used to drive his tractor past our lane on his way to Knockaneagh.
